JetBeam 3M XML2 EDC Flashlight Review

The JETBeam 3M XM-L2 is a powerful tactical flashlight designed for everyday carry adnd hard use.  It utilizes the premium CREE XM-L2 LED, with a maximum output of 560 lumens.  This is an upgrade over the older 3M XM-L (XML) model that had a max output of 450 lumens.  The user interface allows switching between two modes.

Build Quality

The 3M XM-L2 has a robust build with a stainless steel bezel that effectively protects against damage to the bezel area during impacts.  The lens is recessed and well protected. The stainless steel bezel could also be used as a glass breaker or defensive tool.  The entire light has a feeling of quality and durability.  The light uses o-rings at both ends to give it IPX-8 water proofing.

The 3M XM-L2 has two main operating modes, maximum output and a user programmed mode.  The max output is utilized if the head of the light is fully screwed in.  The programmed mode is used if the head is loosened by about 1/5th of a turn.  The basic rear clicky switch has momentary and constant off/on.   It has a programming mode that allows the flashlight to be set to almost any power level available from 30 lumen up to the full 560 lumen.  This is a nice feature to set a low power setting for admin tasks while camping or doing close up tasks.  The  flashlight also has a variable strobe feature, beacon and SOS mode.  It is relatively easy to enter the programming mode, and turning the light off will save the desired setting.  If the light is not used frequently, keep the instructions handy to be able to refresh your memory on the programming.

The brightness of the 3M XM-L2 is impressive and it throws a fairly wide beam with no issues.  The reflector has good size but it is smooth so the pattern is not as smooth as with a orange peel reflector.  In practice, it is not an issue though.
At a price that is well under $100, the JetBeam 3M XM-L2 flashlight is a great light, with programmable settings that give it an advantage over similar flashlights.

The 3M XM-L2 is a mid sized light that is best suited to everyday carry in a gear bag.  It is about 5.5 inches long and weighs about four ounces without batteries.  The flashlight does have a simple clip that would allow belt carry if needed.    The clip could be better, but it serves the purpose.
